Introducing Ace the Himalaya’s Mountain Kid.

Mountain Kid is a unique service offering an entirely new approach to school-based expedition enrichment programmes.

We take the work, stress and hassle of running school expeditions by providing a highly professional and experienced team to work with you from start to finish.

Schools want to be able to offer life-changing opportunities to their pupils, but today it is more complicated than ever for several reasons. Teacher’s priorities, rightly so, are about delivering high-quality lessons which often leaves little time for anything else. The administration of such visits is increasingly burdensome on teachers, administration staff and finance service teams. Completing risk assessments, booking flights, buying visas, arranging coaches, sending off deposits, dealing with parents and chasing payments.

And all this must be achieved even before the running of the expedition begins!

In collaboration with your school

  • Advertise the expedition to parents/students (this includes all schools within a trust)
  • Liaise with parents and coordinate all payments
  • Complete a full risk assessment
  • Source and book flights and coaches
  • Mentor school staff if required (although no school staff need to join the expedition)
  • Our expeditions include an enrichment programme with workshops before departure.

Schools benefit from expeditions simply because the students do. Can you imagine the difference you will make by sending a Pupil Premium or financially disadvantaged child on an expedition? It is truly lifechanging, and this is what we are all about. The advantages of running expeditions are really about the experiences we create for the children. However there are specific advantages to the staff too and teachers often talk about the following as particularly beneficial to their schools :

  • Help in retention of key members of staff as expeditions are often planned a year or longer in advance
  • Incentivise staff running the Duke of Edinburgh award with a free Himalayan expedition
  • The opportunity to take part in a once in a lifetime expedition free of charge
  • For every 15 children we offer two completely free staff places
  • We sponsor a Pupil Premium child of your choice (including equipment and spending money)
  • Two free whole day in school workshops delivered by a qualified teacher
  • Help develop children’s understanding of a range of GCSE subjects including Science, RE, Geography and PSHE.

Not only can school expedition enrichment programmes look great on a CV when students apply for higher education, jobs or training schemes, but the transferable skills learnt throughout the programme are significant. It can boost self-confidence, develop leadership skills, instil self-motivation and resilience. Away from the pressure of passing exams, enrichment extends students’ education and personal growth. It is all evidence of how a student has a wide array of skills and achievements beyond their subject grades.

The purpose of enrichment is to provide extended learning prospects – it gives students the opportunity to study concepts with greater depth, breadth and complexity, while also helping students to pursue their own areas of interest and strengths. This is what our workshop days are for and during them students have the chance to study the history, religion and political environment of the country they are visiting and relating this back to their own values and beliefs. This gives students a richer and deeper understanding of the country and culture along side all of the other benefits an expedition offers.
